Biggs — With recent cool evenings, Deschutes-bound steelhead have made their way past the thermal block of the Bonneville Pool and over the dam. Anglers should work from the mouth of the Deschutes upstream the first mile or so, though fish are available all the way to Shearers Falls. Fishermen should target any riffle, seam, head-in or tail-out that is not flowing too fast. “The water’s really low,” warns guide Bob Toman (503-705-3959). “If (anglers) run up in a boat, they’d better know where to go.”
Most techniques will work here, but the most popular are tossing No. 3 through No. 5 spinners, flies and plugs. No. 2 Green-butted Skunks, BIG Woolly Buggers in green, brown or black, and marabou streamers will do the trick. Brad’s Wigglers, Hot Shots and FatFish are best plugs.
As for spinners, metalheads are attracted to flashing brass. Use brass, silver and black oxide spinners, coupled with green, blue or black tape and tubing. This can lead to days with lots of hook-ups and fast action.
